Today we are delighted to share the winners of our Royal Creation Competition. All of our entrants were outstanding, so our judges Anne Fine and Bianca Rafaella had a really difficult task.

The winners of our Art Competition came from Moorend School in Huddersfield and their group effort of creating glittery tactile coins was truly outstanding. Bianca said,

“I love the creativity and the tactility in the artwork! I think it’s inspired and very clever to use an every day tactile item and recreate it as an accessible piece of art.”

Well done to the 4 talented artists from Moorend School who will all have Hobbycraft vouchers to spend.

Dollie was our runner up with her beautiful art creation celebrating our new patron with patriotic colours. Bianca said,

“I can tell that someone with very little sight has painstakingly drawn this as carefully as they can, and it is beautifully executed. Very detailed and joyful artwork, that reminds me of my childhood drawings.”

In our Creative Writing category we had some beautiful contributions. Our winner was Maleeka with a really imaginative piece that Anne Fine was suitably impressed with and said,

“Our winner, Maleeka, took a very different tack. Her deeply imaginative piece was called Apotheosis: The Realm between Mortal Blindness and Divine Sight. It took the ancient story of Cassandra, the blind prophetess to whose dire warnings no one would listen, and illuminated the world from Cassandra’s own troubled point of view. Both the sense of period and place, and the level of emotional depth in this story, were astonishing. Maleeka’s economical use of words  – “I am the dread voice of man’s mistakes” – “the rustle of leather and the foreboding chime of iron and bronze”  enriched her piece throughout. She is a most worthy winner.”

Maleeka will enjoy a writing workshop with Anne herself!

Our runner up was Camille who really took the time to welcome King Charles as our new patron in her piece. Anne said,

“Camille did a lovely and gracious job of welcoming King Charles as the Society’s new patron, cleverly highlighting how his own interests and passions so often mirror those that enrich our own senses – “smell, taste, touch and hearing” – showing how we can share his holistic values in our own lives and ending on both an respectful and an optimistic note.”

Camille will be able to feed her creativity with a Book Token.

Reflecting on the competition overall RSBC Services Director Carla Rose-Hardman said,

“We have been so amazed by the standards of the entries, so thank you to absolutely everyone who took the time to celebrate with us through our Royal Creation Competition.”

Bianca said,

“Thank you very much for selecting me to judge this wonderful competition. I think everyone has done extremely well and produced very thoughtful creative works, pushing boundaries and perceptions in the visual arts as visually impaired young artists!”

Anne said,

“It was such a pleasure to be asked to judge the written entries of the RSBC Royal Competition. And the ways of approaching the topic proved startlingly varied. Congratulations to the entrants!”
