At Dorton College, we work in a person-centred way. Students are at the very heart of everything we do.  Each curriculum and college life is bespoke, and built around them and their specific needs, aspirations and outcomes. There is a rich and diverse timetable which reflects the individual requirements of each student.

Student Voice

Student voice is reflected in all the activity we carry out at Dorton College. They have opportunities to provide input into their own curriculum, and are involved every step of the way in their college journey.

As part of our student voice activities, we run a ‘You Said, We Did’ suggestions box. They can write suggestions in their preferred form and leave them in the suggestions box. We then add the comments to the ‘You Said, We Did’ list for consideration, so that we can make sure that the college truly reflects the students who attend. Some of the suggestions we’ve received have included having a relaxation area, redesigning the VI hub, day trips for the students, and much. much more!

Student Forum

Dorton College students are regularly asked to contribute to the quarterly Governors meetings. They can make suggestions, give feedback, and take forward anything they feel needs to be presented to the Governing Body. We’ve just created a new Student Forum to make this process more accessible and interactive.

Enterprise

Students have weekly opportunities for Enterprise activities and have run their own company for the last few years – ‘The Big E’. In 2023, they made crafts, held raffles and sales across the different campuses, and raised a large amount of money. Their activities continue on an ongoing basis, and they get to collectively decide on what they would like to spend their profits on. They can also choose to reinvest their profits into their next venture.

Enrichment

Our students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities across Dorton College and our partnership providers. There is a weekly enrichment afternoon where students can choose activities such as going to the gym, swimming, table tennis, pool, going out in the community, gardening, and much more. We also run meditation and yoga sessions especially for those with vision impairment. And we provide regular external trips, which have included visiting the theatre, going out for a meal, or spending a few hours at the bowling alley.
