Gary O’Donoghue’s win at the RTS Television Journalism Awards

Succeeding in his craft
Each year, the Royal Television Society hosts the Television Journalism Awards, celebrating the most prestigious and change makers in the British journalism space.
We were delighted to hear that, at the 2025 awards, Gary O’Donoghue won in the ‘Breaking News’ category for his reporting on the Trump Assassination Attempt for BBC News, as he’s a Dorton House School alumni. When the award was announced, a spokesperson from RTS said: “When it came to the winner, one entry stood out, or perhaps that should be – one reporter. One juror summed this entry up as simply ‘a journalism masterclass.”
Dorton House School is now known RSBC’s Dorton College, providing further education for 16-25-year-olds living with a vision impairment. At the college, we offer a wide range of courses for students that are studied alongside our bespoke specialist VI curriculum. Our unique hybrid working model means students are able to spend part of their week at Dorton, and the rest is spent at our partner colleges. Each student is supported depending on their individual needs, ensuring they can achieve their full potential.
Gary was born partially sighted, but lost the vision in both eyes by the age of eight. He’s shown just what people with vision impairments can achieve. We couldn’t be more delighted about his win, and wish him the very best in what has already been, and will no doubt continue, to be a fantastic career in journalism.
