We’d always suggest that you speak with your Qualified Teacher of Visually Impaired children if you have one and discuss a referral to their Mobility or Habilitation Officers to help you in this area. These specialists will then be able to help your baby all the way through their childhood into adulthood if required.

  • Simple ways that you can help motivate your severely sight impaired baby to sit, roll and eventually walk is to provide the motivation which they might not be getting visually. This could be by blowing raspberries or gently kissing your baby when they have tummy time every time they lift their head. Try placing a musical or vibrating toy or even a fan with ribbons attached to the side of your baby to motivate them to roll hopefully to the stimuli or even away from it! Try to find a motivating reward for each attempt and movement.
  • Try to encourage your baby to enjoy spending time on their feet either on your lap with you supporting their weight or on different surfaces with you holding their fingers.

We have our Families First team of trained Family Practitioners who can support you through these early months and years to help you feel confident with your child’s diagnosis and future.
