Winter Festival 2022
December 19, 2022
In the lead up to Christmas, blind and partially sighted children, young people and their families got together online and in-person at the Life Without Limits Centre (LWLC) for the RSBC’s Winter Festival on Saturday 17th December 2022. There were creative and festive activities for all ages making sure the day was memorable for everyone. A special thank you to all our volunteers who make such an event possible and successful!
There were sensory activities and soft play fun for the younger children and other activities included:
- Decorating gingerbread biscuits in our fabulous kitchen
- Making their own body scrubs with Carla, our Sisterhood lead
- Making cupcakes
- Enjoying a Christmas movie
Everyone enjoyed a live performance from members of the Creative Group to round off the day’s festivities.
Decorating gingerbread
What a better activity to celebrate this time of the year! The children and young people rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in. The kitchen was transformed into a gingerbread decorating workshop filled with sweets and candies. Everyone had huge fun decorating their own gingerbread biscuit.
Making body scrubs
The body scrubs workshop, gave everyone the opportunity to design and make their own personalised products for themselves or as gifts. It was also a great sensory activity. Home-made body scrubs are also a healthier and more ecological way to take care of your skin!
“I have had loads and loads of fun today! It’s been really nice to see the building and make loads of new friends. My favourite part is making the body scrub for my mum!” – Young person attending RSBC activities for the first time
Making festive cupcakes
The children, young people and their families gathered in the kitchen to make yummy cupcakes from scratch. After making and baking they then got creative with their decorating. It was great to see everyone have a go. They were all very proud of the results!
“Jack always enjoys these get togethers, I think my observation is that he feels a little bit more comfortable around people with similar issues to themselves, he feels part of something, there’s a benefit there.” – Dad of a young person
Enjoying the sensory activity
The young children had lots of fun in the soft play area and ball pit. Ball pits are great for sensory play, the children enjoyed throwing and rolling the balls. Parents were happy too, seeing their child experiencing a stimulating and safe play.
Watching A Christmas Carol movie
Young people, looking for some relaxation time, got together in the meeting room to watch A Christmas Carol. They took this opportunity to talk to each other, it was great to see everyone socialising.
“The best bit for me is having gone along with a young child and seeing him now blossom into an older teenager.”
– Mum of a young person
Enjoying live performance
To finish off the festive day, everyone got together to listen to the wonderful piano performance by Chapman and Alice, a talented young boy and young woman attending the RSBC Creative group. It is always fascinating to see how piano music brings some calm and attention in a room.
“It was amazing, a lot of different activities, the kids were able to have hands-on experiences. It think it is a great opportunity, especially as it allows my son to perform, He actually likes to perform.” – Chapman’s dad
“It has been amazing just like catching up with everyone and meet new people as well.” – Alice, young person
“I was really nervous coming today as I’ve never been to a day like this before, or worked with RSBC in person. But now I’ve come and met loads of people I feel a lot better. I’m definitely going to come to more, especially the cooking activities” – Young person attending RSBC activities for the first time
